5/27/2023 0 Comments Ruth mcbride the color of water![]() ![]() Religion is deeply personal, and not every character experiences it in the same way. Similarly, James’s investigations into Judaism allow him to understand his mother’s past, and, by extension, his own family history. Finding religion is frequently a metaphor for discovering a deeper personal truth as James becomes more religious in his adulthood, he is suddenly granted insights into his mother’s faith and her motivations. This is clearest in Ruth’s conversation from Judaism to Christianity, a change with represents not just a crisis of faith, but a complete reinvention of herself. Regardless of denomination, whether it is Orthodox Judaism or Lutheranism, religion informs the behaviors of its devotees, and by extension how they view themselves. Religion in The Color of Water provides the protagonists with a framework within which they are able to develop individual identities and organize their morals and values. ![]() 5/26/2023 0 Comments These savage shores hardcover![]() ![]() But, as Caroline Dodds Pennock conclusively shows in this groundbreaking book, for tens of thousands of Aztecs, Maya, Totonacs, Inuit and others–enslaved people, diplomats, explorers, servants, traders–the reverse was true: they discovered Europe.įor them, Europe comprised savage shores, a land of riches and marvels, yet perplexing for its brutal disparities of wealth and quality of life, and its baffling beliefs. ![]() We have long been taught to presume that modern global history began when the “Old World” encountered the “New”, when Christopher Columbus “discovered” America in 1492. ![]() A landmark work of narrative history that shatters our previous Eurocentric understanding of the Age of Discovery by telling the story of the Indigenous Americans who journeyed across the Atlantic to Europe after 1492 ![]() 5/26/2023 0 Comments Star Wars by John Jackson Miller![]() ![]() The first rays of A New Dawn (pun intended) started to appear in the fall of 2013. ![]() “You can’t always guess what role someone will play.” - Hera Syndulla FIRST STEPS INTO A LARGER WORLD And set as it is during the Imperial period, A New Dawn gave me the opportunity to explore a variety of topics, including how the Empire manages to grow so quickly, injecting itself into all spheres of individual life. Yet when heroes in movies, books and television shows are faced with the Ides of March, it’s always a bad omen. In fact, the Ides of March once signified the new year, which meant celebrations and rejoicing. Ides simply referred to the first full moon of a given month, which usually fell between the 13th and 15th. ![]() ![]() Kalends, Nones and Ides were ancient markers used to reference dates in relation to lunar phases. In fact, just about every pop culture reference to the Ides-save for those appearing in actual history-based books, movies or television specials-makes it seem like the day itself is cursed.īut the Ides of March actually has a non-threatening history. It’s likely that many people who use the phrase today don’t know its true origin. You've probably heard the soothsayer’s warning to Julius Caesar in William Shakespeare's play of the same name: “Beware the Ides of March.” Not only did Shakespeare’s words stick, but they also branded the phrase-and the date, March 15-with a dark and gloomy connotation. ![]() 5/26/2023 0 Comments Jean hegland books![]() ![]() “It was her passion for the book that made me trust her. A decade later it grew again across many widespread areas of the world and today it is defined as “the minimum amount of remuneration that an employer is required to pay wage earners for the work performed during a given period” (ILO).
